Home Based Travel Agent Forum in Miami

I recently attended the Travel Agent Forum in Miami from September 26-29, 2010 and it was superb!  I flew on American Airlines non-stop out of Reagan National and it was a breeze.  A taxi ran about $20 from the airport to the Hyatt Regency located at 400 South East Second Street, in Miami.  The rooms were not ready which I expected since it was only 10 am.  I registered for the event and placed my bags in a holding area for conference attendees.  As soon as I registered and received my name badge I was whisked away by motor coach to a ship inspection on board Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas.

The Liberty of the Seas is a Freedom Class ship.  The other Freedom Class ships are the Freedom and Independence.  I must admit that the Liberty is gorgeous.  If you have ever cruised on the Voyager Class ships (Adventurer, Mariner, Navigator, Voyager and Explorer) think of the Liberty as a maqnified version.  The Liberty has a capacity of 3,634 and made its maiden voyage on May 19, 2007.  Several of the ship highlights were the Flow Rider, H20 Zone, full-size Everlast boxing ring, sports pool, full-size, flat-screen TVs in every stateroom, full-size sports court, 9-hole miniature golf course, Portofino Italian Restaurant, Chops Grille, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Boleros Latin-themed lounge, and Sorrento's pizza, just to name a few.  There was a great selection of foods on board.  The tour was over around 2:30 pm and we boarded the motor coach back to the Hyatt.

Back at the Hyatt check-in was a breeze.  Given the amount of guests I had expected a long wait, but that was not the case.  The front desk was efficient and courteous.  Iced tea and lemonade were served in the lobby.  I have stayed at this particular Hyatt before and therefore knew the lay of the land.  My room was on an upper floor and was spacious, clean and comfortable.  The bathroom area is a nice size, and closet space is ample.  No complaints.

After a meeting it was off to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at Bayside Marketplace for dinner.  Bubba Gump is located at 401 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami. We traveled via the Miami-Dade County Metromover which is very efficient and connected to the hotel.  Metromover is a free automated people-mover system that serves downtown Miami from Omni to Brickell and connects with Metrorail at Government Center and Brickell stations.  Bayside Market has many individually owned retail shops and food establishments.

The Travel Agent Forum consisted of long days with seminars throughout the day at the Miami Convention Center which is connected to the Hyatt Regency.  The seminars and speakers were informative and educational.  Monday night after the forum ended for the day we were treated to a tour, show, dinner and drinks at Jungle Island.  As many times as I have been to Florida I had never heard of Jungle Island.  It was the highlight of my trip.  Jungle Island is located at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, in Miami (www.jungleisland.com).  You will find trainers walking about with various animals.  One trainer had a six month Bengal tiger that was so adorable.  The tiger was like an oversized cat, he kept laying on his back and wrapping is paws around the trainers ankels.  The baby capuchin monkey was cute in a tiny diaper and had the nerve to be shy.  He kept hiding his face behind his trainers neck.  Dr. Wasabi's Wild Adventures show was very entertaining and had you wanting more.  There are so many different types of animals and thousands of species of tropical plants.  There is also a Liger.  Currently the Liger exhibit is under renovation, but I was able to catch a glimpse of the Liger as they moved him from one area to another.  If you're ever in Miami this is a must see that I highly recommend.  This would be a great pre or post cruise excursion.

I was looking forward to Tuesday night.  I had been in conferences all day and attending events on other nights.  Tuesday was literally the only night my husband and I could have a real date night out.  Usually when we're in Miami we have the kids with us pre-cruise and its all about family time.  So I was really looking forward to a night on the town and South Beach at that baby!  I put on my dress that I had bought just for this occasion with shoes that were way too high (but they looked good!) and my husband looked rather sleek in his linen slacks.

Tuesday night was spent at Mango's in South Beach.  They are located at 900 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, Florida from 11:00 am - 5:00 am daily. I had heard great reviews about Mango's from fellow agents at the conference.  So, the hubby and I hopped a cab to South Beach ($20.00 from the Hyatt) that dropped us off right on the corner of Ocean Drive.  After paying the cover charge ($20.00) and once inside there was a very lively crowd with performers on stage in costume.  When the performers were not performing there were individuals from the audience hopping on stage and performing.  We ordered Mojitos ($27 for two drinks...wow pricey right) that tasted good, but did nothing for you).  The bartenders (both female and male) gave great eye candy if this was what you were looking for.

We did not stay long, call me old, I call me classy (lol).  The crowd was a bit too young for us, the music was a bit too loud and we weren't looking to hook-up with anyone.  As we walked out we stopped and asked a Miami Beach policeman (who I assume was on-site security) where we could find a nice bar/lounge where we could have a drink and hold a conversation with some music in the background.  He laughed and then directed us in the direction of an Irish bar.  I'm sorry but I did not come to Miami to go to an Irish bar.  At this point it had started to rain very hard.  We called it a night and hopped a cab back to the Hyatt ($20).  Back at the Hyatt we stopped by the bar got a glass of wine and went up to our room.  We had spent $87 for a cab, cover charge and drink, not to mention the wine we just purchased and had done nothing.  All we could do was laugh..what else can you do.

The next day we returned home.  It was raining cats and dogs, a tropical storm was in the forecast (can't stop mother nature).  The flight before mine was canceled due to weather.  My flight was delayed, but still left.  Our American Airline flight was non-stop and we had no issues.  We took the subway from Reagan Airport to Maryland (yellow line and transferred to the red line at Gallery Place towards Glenmont) and it was a smooth ride.

Carnival Cruise Experience on the Pride Sailing out of Baltimore, Maryland

I recently cruised on the Carnival Pride which departed out of Baltimore, Maryland on Sunday, June 27, 2010.  This would be my first cruise on Carnival and my first departure out of Baltimore.  I have been on other cruise lines and departed out of other ports.  I was looking forward to comparing Carnival and the Baltimore departure.

Driving to the Port of Baltimore on Interstate 95 is a breeze.  The exit is located directly off of Interstate 95.  The Port of Baltimore had ample employees directing you into the Port.  You must first produce documentation to the Port attendant in order to gain access to the Port.  The parking lot is set up so that when you are finished you have circled the entire parking lot.  After documentation display, you are directed to an attendant in order to pay for parking in advance for the week.  Next stop is on to another attendant to unload your luggage.  Last, you are directed by an attendant as to where to park your vehicle.  Proceeding to the check-in building is easy and directly across the parking lot.  Once inside the Carnival check-in facility the line moved quickly and was for the most part effortless.  At check-in there was a minor glitch with our reservation because we decided to establish a cash account instead of credit.  The reservation agent was unable to issue SeaPass cards and had to eventually have a supervisor step in to correct the problem.  We also inquired as to where the Guest Relations deck was located and were given incorrect information.  After a quick Carnival picture it was on to boarding.

My initial impression of the Pride was that it was dark and gloomy.  The ship was crowded and the elevators took quite a while to arrive.  When we finally made our way to grab some lunch, the buffet was closed due to the upcoming Muster Drill.  After the Muster Drill there were burgers and hotdogs available.  By this time I had a headache in full force.  Our luggage arrived with no glitches and our stateroom was available.  We were in a balcony stateroom located on Deck Seven.  The stateroom was standard for a balcony and there was ample closet and drawer storage.  The bathroom was well equipped with the needed necessities.  The balcony was also standard.  The room itself had a queen size bed and pull out sleeper sofa.  The sleeper sofa is a little different than regular sleeper sofas.  Instead of pulling forward, it pulls to the side.  Thus, you end up lying sideways with your feet going towards the head of the queen bed.  For a taller person, this is a problem.  My son is tall and his feet did hang a little off of the bed.  All in all I had no complaints about the balcony stateroom.

After checking out the room, we headed to Deck Nine to order a drink and enjoy the Sail Away Festivities.  The ship was originally scheduled to depart at 4:30 pm.  However, we did not depart until after 7:30 pm.  The reason we were told was that the ship was waiting on supplies to arrive and thus, there were no sail away festivities.  In additional we were charged an extra tax due to the fact that we were still sitting in Port for our drinks and soda package.  I would never have noticed, but found myself looking at receipts a few days into the cruise and noticed the price difference on a drink that was ordered each time.  The first night into the early morning hours we had to turn around and head back to meet the Coast Guard.  Rumors were rampant, but apparently there was an altercation of some sort on board and two individuals were seriously injured.

On the second day of our cruise, the ship automatically debts your account for all gratuities and then sends out a notification the next day.  This was unacceptable to me.  I feel that gratuities are to be given after services are rendered.  A trip to Guest Relations and a request to have all gratuities credited back corrected this issue.

I did not swim as the swimming pool was a bit small and a little too overcrowded for my taste.  The buffet was also limited with long lines.  I usually do not go to the dining room because I don't like to be on a schedule or adhere to a dress code while on vacation.  However, on this cruise that was not the case.  I went to the dining room almost every night and must say that the food, wine and service were great!  The casino and gambling were good.  I actually took second place in the Blackjack Tournament and had my own little cheering squad!  One disappointing note was that the bars did not stock certain top shelf liquors, but sold it for purchase in the gift shop.  Drinks varied depending on the person making the drink.

During the course of the cruise we stopped at Port Canaveral, Nassau, Bahamas, and Freeport, Bahamas.  Port Canaveral is really in the middle of nowhere.  There are ample shuttle buses though to take you into town and the beach.  As usual we got a late start and didn't have much time (so no excursions for us).  We headed to the mall and there were bargains to be found.  We shopped so much that we missed the last shuttle and had to find a taxi to take us back to the Port.  I was sweating it for a minute as I didn't think we were going to make it and actually had to run once we got out of the cab (not good!).  I felt as if I were back in school as a very matronly security officer said in a low voice...RUN.

Even though we had been to Nassua many times, many individuals in our group had not.  We chartered a local driver and negotiated a price for a tour of Nassau.  The local driver was excellent and kept us well entertained with his many stories.  I was in search of the Tortuga Rum Factory for some rum cakes.  Our guide suggested that we try the Bahamas Rum Cake Factory, located at 602 East Bay Street in Nassau to try a little something different.  We stopped there and sampled many different flavors of rum cake.  Sure enough, our guide was right.  I must say their cakes are absolutely wonderful and I quickly forgot about Tortuga.  You learn something new all the time!  We headed over to Paradise Island to the Atlantis and toured the facilities.  The Atlantis is a great property with many activities and a wonderful assortment of aquarium life.

Next stop was the Queens Staircase.  The Queens Staircase is the most visited attraction in Nassau.  The 65 steps, recently renovated, were carved out of solid limestone by slaves in the late 18th century, between 1793 and 1794. It is reported that slaves were forced to cut through rocks with axes and other sharp hand tools.  This 102 foot staircase was named in honor of the 65 years of Queen Victoria's reign. Construction of this monument is still regarded as remarkable.

Last, but not least, the straw market.  I have been to this market many times but can't resist the urge to go back each time I'm in Nassau.  I was able to find intricately carved wooden jewelry boxes and chimes for a very good price.

Freeport, Bahamas is not located within walking distance to the center of town.  When exiting the ship there are many shops located around the Port.  We took a taxi into town (which took approximately 20 minutes) and browsed through the local markets while drinking fresh papaya drinks (yum).  There are many nice cafes and the vendors are very laid back.  Freeport would be an excellent Port of Call to reserve an excursion.

We had a few Sea Days on the cruise and returned to Baltimore on 4th of July morning.  Disembarkment was painful.  We elected to carry our luggage off since we were walking to our car, and to save time.  Otherwise we would have to put our luggage out for pick-up the night before and then identify it the next day in a holding area for luggage.  On other cruise lines the person walking off with their luggage would be called to disembark first.  This was not the case with Carnival.  We did not get off until about 10:45 am.  Many areas were off limits to passengers waiting to disembark.  It was a crowded affair and we felt like cattle being herded about.

It would be safe to say that this was not a great cruise for me.  I didn't have to worry about gaining any weight because the buffet food was not that great.  I didn't swim and the bar drinks were mediocre.  However when I returned I checked the cruise critic reviews to see what others that were on the same ship with me had to say.  To my surprise many said they had a great time, the food was great, etc.  This really goes to show that as individuals we are all very different and what is important to one, may not be important to the next one.

Last, but not least, I do want to mention that the Port of Baltimore is a great Port to sail from, especially if you're driving from Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania.  No planes or delays to deal with.  Just park and go.  Carnival and Royal Caribbean both sail from this Port of Call.

An Unexpected Vacation -- Homewood Suites by Hilton in Silver Spring, Maryland

Not that long ago and very unexpected, I ended up at Homewood Suites by Hilton.   It was July 25th around 3:00 pm that a fierce thunderstorm hit the area.  It was brief, but left devastation in its aftermath.  We lost power, (which I might add we never do) and I knew it was bad.

Oh well, I lay down and slept for a little while with the hope that all would be well when I woke.  I woke about 6 pm and nothing had changed.  Naturally I panicked...no computer to search hotels on.  Only my blackberry which seemed extremely slow.  It was at this moment that I thought you really need to have a local hotel plan.  I know a lot about hotels in other cities, but not where I live…..hmmm….not good.  I thought you should automatically know which hotels around you accept pets.  A definite learning lesson, but there was no time to waste.  Luckily, my first search brought up Homewood Suites by Hilton, located at 8728 Colesville Road, in downtown Silver Spring.  I called to see if they had availability and was told yes, but very limited.  I immediately reserved a King suite (all that was left) at $219 per night.   Hmmm, a little more than I wanted to pay, but I was in a bind.  For once I followed my instincts which told me this power outage would not be over quickly.

The task of packing up in the dark with only two flashlights (another learning lesson to buy more flashlights) was a little overwhelming.  Meanwhile the thermostat was quickly rising.

When we arrived at the hotel there was a backlog of vehicles attempting to reach the valet parking attendant.  No worries.  We were able to double park with the many other vehicles and went to check in.  There was one front desk clerk.  He worked tirelessly to accommodate the long line of guests, many who were frustrated themselves from not having power, together with their frustrated children and animals in tow.  Never once did the front desk clerk show any sign of frustration.  Yes, the elevators and staff were overwhelmed, but this was never exhibited to their guests.  Homewood Suites obviously had not anticipated the massive power outage and subsequent sold out status, but rose to the occasion.

We decided to valet park at a cost of $12.00 per day.  You were able to go in and out all day.  You only needed to call down thirty minutes prior to give them adequate time to bring your vehicle around.  The suite was great.  I had never stayed at a Homewood Suites before and was in for a real treat.  The room was tastefully decorated.  There was a large king bedroom at one end with ample storage for clothing.  At the other end was the living room area where a sleeper sofa was located, a small table, chester drawers, chairs and full kitchen.  The kitchen came supplied with dishes, cooking ware, full size refrigerator, stove cook top, microwave, sink, dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker, and an assortments of teas, coffees, paper towels, dishwashing detergent, pot holders, and dish towels.  The sleeper sofa had a nice size flat screen TV and the bedroom also had a nice size flat screen TV.  The large bathroom was in-between the living area and king bedroom and of course was stocked with ample soaps, shampoos, etc.   The room also had complimentary wireless.  Please note that this was great for a computer, but not for X-box live (although my son surely tried….all you mothers and wives out there who have a gamer in your family know exactly what I’m referring to).

The hotel itself was very quite (I’m not sure how with families, children and animals, but it was), they have a wonderful in-door swimming pool and jacuzzi.  The hotel also offers Monday-Thursday a complimentary hot breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles, pancakes, juice, and coffee) and a dinner each evening (Manager’s Reception) which consists of different menus.  One evening there was baked salmon, salad, rolls, potatoes, beer, wine and soda.  Another evening the menu consisted of cold cut sandwiches, salad, delicious chocolate cake, and the same beverages.

At one point during my stay I needed to make an adjustment to my reservation.  I was told by the front desk that I would have to speak with the manager, Mr. Darrel Russell.  Mr. Russell was extremely accommodating, professional and courteous.  As you can image many guests were on edge waiting for their power to be restored.  I noticed that Mr. Russell made a point of conversing with guests in various settings to ensure that they were enjoying their stay.  If one did not know that there was an entire county suffering a power outage and that the hotel had been sold out for days, you would have thought it was just another great day at Homewood Suites.  To me this says that Mr. Russell runs a great hotel.  In fact, I was almost disappointed when my power did come back on!

Homewood Suites is a fantastic value for the money.  Not only are the room accommodations outstanding, but add in the value of a complete breakfast and dinner.   The hotel itself is centrally located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland.  Within a three block radius there is a movie theater, shopping and subway.  I noticed a variety of individuals, which included families and professionals.  This is a great location for tourists who want to see the National’s Capital.  The redline subway is very convenient for traveling to downtown DC.

Weekend in New York City

I recently traveled to New York in early June for a long weekend to take my husband away for his birthday.  I took the Bolt Bus (www.boltbus.com), which is a semi-new bus company that picks up on the Mezzanine Level of the Union Station Parking Deck at Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Avenue, N.E., in Washington, DC.  If you enter this facility from the front entry of Union Station, proceed through the Atrium past the food court until you see the escalators, proceed up the escalators to the mezzanine level, the staging area will be to your immediate left.  Parking is available at Union Station with entry located off of H Street, N.E, Washington, D.C.  We made reservations directly on Bolt’s website.  Our round-trip fare for two people was $67.  Wow..what a great deal!  In comparison Amtrak’s regular train would have cost $364.  Make sure to join their free “Bolt Rewards” program.  This program earns you a free one-way ticket after eight trips and priority boarding on current travel.

A fifteen minute break is allowed at the rest stop in Delaware.  It was a breeze…no traffic, no tolls, nice comfortable seats.   I slept and read on the way up and back.  The driver will make a point of announcing not to disturb your neighbor with loud talking or music.  The passengers were a mixture of all age groups, singles, couples, families.  Bolt Bus has numerous travel times per day going and returning.  We left at 11:30 am (promptly I might add) and arrived at 3:45 pm, dropping off at 33rd & 7th Avenue.  This is an outdoor stop at the northeast corner of the intersection. The bus will stop in the designated bus stop area on 33rd Street in front of a Sbarro’s Italian restaurant

We walked to the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street (Midtown) Manhattan (109 East 42nd Street, New York, NY 10017). Grand Hyatt did not disappoint.  Their check-in was a breeze and the front desk was extremely pleasant.  Our room was on the 28th floor.  The room was very spacious with contemporary décor and a large bathroom.  There was a nice mixture of leisure and business travelers, singles, families and couples.  The concierge gave excellent dinner recommendations and directions on the subway.  The Market (causal eatery) is situated in the hotel’s lobby.  They had a nice selection of foods and beverages.    The hotel is just a few steps from Grand Central Station.  We were able to catch the subway everywhere or walk.   I would definitely stay at the Grand Hyatt again and would recommend to my clients.

There is so much to do in New York, the possibilities are endless.  On Saturday there was a street fair going for blocks and blocks.  One of the Greek eateries had these huge chicken kebabs, with an aroma that you could smell as soon as you stepped outside….Yum!  Next to the Greek food stand, there was a food stand that made fruit smoothies.  The banana and strawberry were so good.  A little further down the block after eating all of that great food and drinking our smoothies was a massage stand.  I elected to have the foot massage and he the back massage.  Last, but not least, we stopped at a fruit stand and bought an unbelievable amount of fruit at an unbelievable low price for our room and topped it off with a bottle of wine.  Now, you tell me…what more could a girl ask for.

We were lucky enough to secure great tickets to the Cotto/Foreman boxing match at Yankees Stadium.  I might add that this was at the new stadium and was the first boxing match to be held at Yankee Stadium in over 34 years.  What a great stadium!  We arrived early so we could walk around and take in the sights.  It just takes your breath away…if you’re a sports fan!  The subway is right across the street and so convenient.  We took the train to the Stadium and back.  It could not have been easier.  No car needed.

Reluctantly we walked on Monday to catch the Bolt Bus back to DC…our little getaway was over.  Once again, the Bolt Bus did not disappoint.  They had a company representative on hand to answer questions.  We grabbed a quick slice of pizza from Sbarro’s Italian restaurant (right at the bus waiting area) before we boarded the bus and were on our way.  The pizza was good and made for a nice sleep on the way back.

Once back in DC, the only glitch was the infamous Redline (ugh).  Oh well, don’t sweat the small stuff!

What are Home Based Travel Agencies and Can They Survive?

Almost daily there seems to be news regarding whether or not the travel industry will prevail or be doomed due to the large internet booking engines and supposedly low prices.  As I read these articles, if I were not a travel professional and co-owner of a travel and tour company, I might be convinced to wonder too.  Fortunately, there is no doubt in my mind as to the future of either.

The company I co-own with my business partner, Armando, is a home based travel and tour agency.  Kind of sounds like something homegrown, huh?  Well, actually that might not be too far from the truth in many ways, yet far from it in others.  Not too many years ago, home based travel and tour agencies were thought of almost as Chia Pets.  And “everybody” knows that a Chia Pet compared to a real live storefront agency is simply just not as good, or so you thought!

We are definitely not a storefront agency or internet booking site, and have no aspiration to become one.  That being said, you are probably wondering....who and what are you?  We are a company that was formed by two individuals who are as much different as they are similar.  These two people have a true love and passion for travel, genuinely love working with varied degrees of people, and making their dreams come true.  We are two people who are very much interested in what you have to say, and are excellent listeners.  We are iTravel.

When people ask me “what sets you apart from other agencies,” I have no problem in answering them.  The logic is simple….we work out of our homes so we don’t have quotas to fill for fear of losing our jobs.  We are able to take our time and truly work with people individually and on a personal basis.  We may not have a big office to meet at, but isn’t it much nicer to meet at Starbucks (coffee is on us) or the client’s home?  We are able to keep our hours geared to our client’s needs, not ours.  What we sell at iTravel is more than a cruise or hotel reservation, we sell personalized and customized service.  We are available to our clients 24/7.  Try calling the internet site or storefront agencies at 1:00 am in the morning when something is not right while traveling out of the country.  The majority of us want to hear a comforting voice, not an automated voice saying “please push 2 if this is a true emergency”.  At iTravel, we have no automated voices, just the voices of Armando and me.

In a way we are an old fashioned travel and tour company with young minded folk (humor us please).  Remember when the customer really was right and your business really was appreciated?  Remember when the insurance salesman (I'm dating myself here) came to your home and made things convenient for you, the customer?  That is exactly what we do -- we make selecting travel convenient for you.

We tailor our hours and appointments to accommodate your busy schedule, whether in-person, via phone
, or through e-mail.  Its up to you; you're the customer.  Our goal is to make planning your travel as stress-free as possible.  Leave the stressing up to us.  Give us a call so we can assist you in planning that perfect, dream vacation.

Concept and Attitude – An Evening with “The Design Hotels”

The Design Hotels (www.DesignHotels.com) recently hosted a sit down dinner at Hook Restaurant in the heart of Georgetown.  I had the honor of being an invitee to this wonderful event.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Design Hotels, they are an exclusive collection (170) of one-of-a-kind hotels scattered across the globe.  In order to earn the recognition of being a member of The Design Hotels, these hotels must pass very strict requirements.  The Design Group receives many applications each year for the pristine recognition of being under The Design Group, but only a select few of chosen.   The best way to describe this collection of hotels is to say they are fun, hip and modern.  Although it’s not just the furnishings that are cool, it’s the whole concept and attitude.

I had the honor of meeting several hoteliers from around the globe.  These included representatives from London, England (Covent Garden, Charlotte Street, The Pelham, Knightsbridge, Number Sixteen, The Soho and Haymarket Hotels), Paris, France (Murano and Kube Hotels), Dublin, Ireland (The Morgan), Barcelona, Spain (Hotel Omm, Claris Hotel, and Granados 83), Madrid, Spain (Hotel Urban), Stockholm, Sweden (Nordic Light Hotel), and Brussels, Belgium (The Dominican).

The Design event was a small and intimate affair allowing you the time to speak in depth with each hotelier.  This was unique and reflected the ideology and attitude of this Group.  I left feeling as though I had acquired new friends from across the globe.  This was not your average meet and greet.  And these are not your average hotels.

It would be safe to say, that this assortment of hotels is much more suited to adults whether it be couples, singles, a girls or guy getaway.  My previous bookings at these properties have only received stellar reviews.

So, guys and gals when you’re ready to venture out to awesome destinations and experience the warmth of luxurious and sexy accommodations, give me a ring…..

I’ll be happy to assist.
